What You Need To Know About House Cleaning

Spring Cleaning Tips

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about spring cleaning your home. Spring cleaning is important for everyone, particularly if you’re an allergy sufferer. You owe it to yourself and your family to enjoy a clean that’s more than dirt-deep. Think allergen-deep

Make a Schedule

Scope out your home: What areas need the most work? Where do you skip during routine cleaning? Those are the best places to start. Regardless of where you start, having a plan for when you’re tackling each room will keep you focused on the task at hand.

De-clutter

Decluttering makes you more efficient and keeps you organized. But more than that, clutter has psychological influences. It signals to your brain that work isn’t done. Studies have shown that a disorganized home adds to your stress level. The scientific implications of inhaling dust – combined with the psychological stress of coming home to a pile of unsorted laundry or cluttered desk – can take a toll.

Always Work from Top to Bottom

When you think about how to spring clean your home, it’s important to start from the ceiling down. This will force debris downward and keep you from having to re-dust or re-clean your space. If you have a vacuum with an extension hose, use it to get cobwebs and dust from your ceilings and fans first.

Use a HEPA Vacuum

Is your vacuum ready for spring cleaning? Finding the right vacuum is one of the most important parts of spring cleaning. Remove more than just dust and build-up when you vacuum. A high-quality HEPA vacuum catches particles you can’t even see. It traps pet dander, allergens and all household particles in your home.

When shopping for home or apartment cleaning services, always be clear about the services you require. Generally, house cleaner service companies quote projects based on job size and specific cleaning services requested. If you need your bathroom deep cleaned, let them know! In many cases, home cleaning services offer packages, so it’s crucial to let them know about any special requests to avoid misunderstandings later.

Factors To Consider:

Frequency – How often do you want your home cleaned? Most services are relatively flexible and work with your schedule. Daily, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly, and “As Needed” availability helps you keep your home looking fresh and sharp!

Your Schedule – Most cleaning services in NYC are happy to accommodate your schedule. After building trust, there’s the option of giving them security clearance to do their work without being there.

Don’t Forget to Consider Business Reputation

In the Internet age, people share their thoughts and experiences more freely than ever before – especially when they’re unhappy about a service. It’s always worth checking out reviews to learn about what others think. An occasional poor review is not a problem. But, think twice about using home cleaning services with a bad rep and a pattern of adverse encounters with customers. Helpful Tips To Make Cleaning Your House Easy!

Every mother likes to keep their house neat and tidy. We pride ourselves on home presentation and don’t like mess one bit. But sadly, our families rarely think the same way. It’s easy for our homes to get messy, especially around Winter time. Winter is the season where the kids are on holiday, so spend way more time in the house. As a result, the house starts to look a lot worse.

Tidy One Room At A Time

The best way to clean your home is to do it one room at a time. Instead of drifting between rooms, you should focus on one room and stay in there until the job is done. I’d recommend you clean the main rooms first. Start with your living room, and then the kitchen, bathroom and dining room. These are the rooms people are likely to spend the most time in and see the most of, so make sure they’re cleaned first. It can also help if you split each room into sections and focused on specific things to do. E.g. For the bathroom, focus on cleaning the sink first, and then the bath/shower and finish with the floor.

Make People Clean Their Own Bedrooms

To save time when cleaning the house, make people clean their own rooms. Normally, it’s hard to pinpoint who’s made all the mess around the house. There’s no way to prove who made the lounge messy or who left the bathroom in bad shape. But, it’s pretty obvious who the culprit of a messy bedroom is!! Don’t feel the need to clean your children’s bedrooms, they should do it themselves. You’ve got a lot on your plate as it is, the last thing you need is to fix their mess too. Making them do this is also a good way to teach them a lesson in looking after themselves and independence. They’ll learn that not everything in life is going to be done for them.

Throw Out Unwanted Stuff

Instead of keeping lots of things lying around the house, it’s better if you just throw them out. There are lots of things you can recycle, but some stuff needs taking to a tip. To save you the trouble of loading your car up and driving somewhere to dispose of the waste, just buy a skip bin instead. You can get skip bins delivered outside your home and ready for you to throw all the junk in. Then, when it’s full, it will get carried away by whoever you bought it from. No hassle for you whatsoever! It’s especially useful if you’re clearing your garage out and have lots of old equipment like fridges, microwaves or beds.

If you’re due for a big home clean up, then follow the tips I’ve mentioned here. They’re going to make life a whole lot easier for you, and should cut down on time. It will make cleaning less of a chore and far quicker to do.

What qualities should I need to look in a carpet cleaning services company?

While it’s true that there are a lot of professional carpet cleaners out there, the quality of their work differs depending on their experience, cleaning agents used and tools. When you have your carpets cleaned, it should not only look clean. In fact, there are a lot of factors that you should consider before you decide that your carpets have indeed been cleaned well and that the professionals did a great job at it

The Feel of Your Carpets

It is unfortunate that with many cleaning companies, you may get a thorough carpet cleaning, but your carpet suffers for it. Sometimes, cleaning companies use strong chemical cleaning agents that stress and weaken the fibers of your carpets. Your carpets can end up deformed and rough to the touch. If your cleaning company has thoroughly cleaned your carpet, but when you feel its surface, it’s not rough and doesn’t have bald patches, then that’s an added point to them.

The Smell

Chemical cleaning agents have a strong, potent odor that many people don’t like. This can be a bad thing if you live in a household with lots of children, or if you’re expecting a guest soon after your carpets have been cleaned. Some companies have special services where they use cleaning agents infused with a certain scent that’s pleasing. Sure, it’s an added expense, but definitely worth it if you don’t want to have to cover your nose when you’re in the vicinity of your carpet.

The Germs

Most cleaning methods do remove dirt and other particles that are in the carpets, but what’s more dangerous than soil and dust is the bacteria that come along with it. Most cleaning companies now offer cleaning agents that have anti-bacterial properties that make your carpet not only clean but also hygienic and safe.

Staying Clean

Some carpets don’t really stay clean after the cleaning company is done with them. This means the work was done haphazardly and the work was not very thorough. When carpets are washed and dried meticulously, almost all traces of dirt are dislodged and removed. Also, there are no remnants of the cleaning agent left on the carpet. However, with poorly done carpet cleaning, there’s still dirt of chemical residue embedded deep into the carpet base. These act like magnets, and actually boost the accumulation of dirt and other particles, meaning your carpets get dirty faster.

How to Choose a Good Carpet Cleaning Company

Whether you’re looking to hire a good carpet cleaning company for your home or your business, it’s important to know what you’re dealing with.  After all, your carpets are pivotal to the appearance of your home or business.  Add to the fact that many of your carpets need to be handled with care and dedication, and it’s no wonder you’re looking to learn how to choose a good carpet cleaning company.

Look at Customer History

The number one rule of choosing a good carpet cleaning company – or any service, that is! – is to pay careful attention to the vendor’s customer history.  Don’t be afraid to ask for third-party testimonials, as this will give you a better idea of the level of satisfaction you can expect

Look For Flexibility

In order to hire a good carpet cleaning company, you need to find a vendor who’s willing to work around your busy schedule.  After all, you shouldn’t have to wait around for a vendor to show up to clean your carpets and upholstery!  If the vendor is reluctant to be flexible with their scheduling, it may be time to move on

Look for Varied Services

A good carpet cleaning company won’t just specialize in carpets – in fact, they’ll also know how to clean your furniture upholstery.  The sign of a great carpet cleaning company is if they know how to clean oriental rugs.  If you find a vendor that offers all three of these specialized services, call them immediately – it’s practically guaranteed that they’re the kind of carpet cleaning company you’re looking for!

Choose a Good Carpet Cleaner

This expert on how to choose the best carpet cleaner information is to help you make an informed decision for your next carpet cleaning. Hiring a quality good carpet cleaning company goes beyond opening the phone book or conducting a random Internet search too. Carpets are one of the home’s best assets, so everyone needs to make sure that they’re hiring an experienced professional who will do the job right

You should wait as long as possible before your carpet is clean

No. Dirt is abrasive, and it’s like sandpaper. Every time you step on your carpet, you grind dirt into its fibres. A dirty carpet will not last nearly as long as a clean carpet. The help of an excellent tool like a vacuum, by itself, is simply not enough. In this case, you need a dedicated team of experienced technicians.

The only reason to clean your carpet is to remove the dirt.

-No. Indoor Air quality experts say, “once a carpet looks dirty, it’s filthy and filthy carpet can be a serious health risk especially since spend 90% of their time indoors”. If you have allergies, asthma, or any other breathing problems, one primary source could be the pollen and dust mites on your carpet. To achieve 100% clean, you should also eliminate bacteria, chemicals, and tobacco tar residue.

One method to clean a carpet is as good as another.

No. You can choose from 2 primary methods of carpet cleaning machines: Dry chem cleaning or hot water extraction. First, I’ll explain the dry chem carpet’s cleaning. Many people believe that dry cleaning carpets is like dry cleaning your clothing. Thus, it is not true. All carpet cleaner use water in one way or another. Therefore, it is also not true.

When the dry chem method used, the carpets cleaner uses a machine similar to a floor polisher spinning a large cotton bonnet from side to side, absorbing the dirt that in the carpets, it’s like trying to rub the dirt out of carpets with a large towel. Can you imagine doing this to your hair? While this method can be useful as an interim carpet cleaning, it can leave a chemical residue in your carpets, which is the main reason dry chem carpet cleaning is not very effective.

When You Need Professional Possums Control

THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A PEST CONTROL SERVICE NEAR YOU

Deal with a variety of unwelcome pests such as raccoons, possum, rats and of course those pesky mosquitos we are famous for. No one wants to have to call a pest control service but it’s a fact of life at times. How do you know a good pest control company from a bad one? That’s just one of the questions many people ask when realizing they need professional help with their pest problem but there is a lot more to choosing the right company. You want to make sure you are getting the most for your money and not just clicking on the first result that comes up in Google

CAN THEY MEET YOUR NEEDS?

There are many pest control providers and the surrounding suburbs, however there is a stark difference in what providers specialize in or don’t specialize in. Just because they are a pest control service, does not mean they will offer the specific treatment or pest removal you may need. For example, let’s say you have an ant infestation or a flea problem around your home; you Google for a pest control provider Pest Control and explain to them the situation and they will likely be glad to help you; but that’s ants & fleas. What happens when you live near a bayou and a gator or raccoon wanders into your backyard? Do you just call the same pest control company for that as well? Maybe, but not all pest control companies will be suitable for every situation; some specialize in reptile removal, endangered bird relocation for example, and some only handle insects and small rodents. You have to know what you are dealing with to find the right provider that matches up with those needs

Everyday Pest Control Requests

Typically most of our calls are simply to prevent and control many of the pests common to the area such as ants, love bugs, crickets, spiders, fleas, rodents and other pests common to this region. There are some factors to deciding the proper treatment you will need for your home in order to achieve the best result based on your circumstances. Taking these variables into consideration will ensure that the treatment outcome matches your expectations and fulfills your pest control needs based on those variables.

What level of pest activity are you dealing with and what is your tolerance threshold for pest activity? This will make a big difference because 100% eradication of some pests like ants and spiders is just not feasible while more uncommon pests such as fleas and earwigs can be nearly 100% eradicated. Ants and spiders are so common to the ecosystem that you have to find the acceptable level of pest activity that does not interfere with your family’s peace of mind. For example, a small ant pile here or there might not be a problem; but, 3 foot high mounds all over your yard are definitely a different issue. Finding the answers to these questions will help us to know what type of control strategy to use so we can meet your expectations.

Are you open to a regular service plan? Typically if you want to maintain control of your home and yard and not just put a bandage on the situation, then a regular automatic service plan is the most popular option. Usually set up for bi-monthly visits, this will keep your yard free from infestation and keep your pest activity to a minimum. Treatments should be guaranteed and offer free emergency treatments between regularly scheduled ones should there be any unusual activity between visits due to weather or something else. Keep in mind that if you have a very heavy infestation or your tolerance for pest activity is very low most pest control companies also offer monthly services instead of the longer intervals between treatments.

POSSUMS AND HOUSE MICE AND RATS, OH MY!

Some people may think these furry critters are cute and cuddly, but when they’re infesting your home, they are anything but.

HOUSE MICE

Did you know that the word “mouse” is derived from the Sanskrit verb meaning “to steal”? These furry creatures have been living up to this reputation for thousands of years, and today, you can find this kind of mouse almost every region of the world. In fact, in most parts of the world, the house mouse is the #1 rodent pest.

ROOF RATS

This creature is known by many names, including black rat, house rat, and ship rat. Unlike the ground-dwelling rat, which can be found almost everywhere, the roof rat prefers dwelling in roofs and treetops. Because of this, the roof rat is less dependent on human foods than the rat. But that doesn’t mean the roof rat is a good houseguest. These rodents pose another threat: gnawing damage.

OPOSSUMS

You’ll be able to find these creatures in crawlspaces beneath buildings, like underneath porches, or in the attics of houses. If you truly want to protect your house from these creatures, “opossum-proofing” your house is your best option. That means locating the holes where they’re getting into the house and sealing those openings off when the opossums are gone. To get the opossums out in the first place, live trapping is very effective when you use the proper bait

Opossums are “true omnivores” and will eat anything they can, from small mammals and mushrooms to garbage and vegetables. In fact, that’s one reason you’ll see them by the road so often—they’re trying to feed on roadkill. Uncovered trash cans or trash bags left on the side of the road are easy targets for food, so placing your trash in a covered container will help lower your chances of their meddling with them and making a mess you’ll have to clean up later.

Opossums

Habits

Opossums may be ugly by some standards, but they are incredibly helpful mammals. Because they eat insects and snakes, a lot of property owners consider them beneficial. Opossums are nomadic, and seldom stay long in any place. They will use abandoned burrows or crawl spaces, but they will not dig their own. Opossums are nocturnal, slow-movers, and generally friendly toward humans. When threatened, the opossum has a seizure-like response, causing it to faint and “play dead”. This is not a voluntary response–opossums have developed that reaction biologically. They also release a foul-smelling liquid during this response that smells like rotten meat, because predators rarely choose to eat rotting meat.

Problems with Opossums

Opossums’ teeth are not meant for attacking or even preying on animals; their teeth are good for chewing and holding. They do not attack humans, and instead will play “dead” when danger is perceived. Opossums don’t dig holes, destroy gardens, bite, sting, or stay in one place for very long. In short, opossums aren’t really pests at all.

Prevention of Opossums

Opossums want two things: food and shelter. Here is a list of preventative measures:

Make sure all spaces around or under your home are carefully sealed or fenced off. Opossums do like sleeping under porches or in attics, if there’s a way in.

Make sure your garbage areas are controlled and tidy, and all lids or closures are secure.

Don’t leave pet food out at night.

If you do have any abandoned burrows in your yard, fill them in.

Eliminating Opossums

If you do have a problem with opossums in your yard, there are multiple methods of removing opossums. It’s always best to call a professional pest control expert, as they can choose the most effective way to rid your yard of these backyard loungers.

2020 How much does pest control cost?

If you have household pests, you want to get rid of them, fast! Not only can they be a nuisance, but they could – in the case of termites for one – cause significant structural damage to your home. The best and safest way to get rid of pests is to hire a professional pest control service. They have the expertise, training and license to carry out this sort of work – especially considering that noxious chemicals are often used.

You can expect pest control to cost anywhere from $300 to $700, depending on the service. You may pay $130 for a 3 bedroom house, $170 for a 4 bedroom house, $250 – $300 for rodent removal, $225 for possum removal, $250 for a pre-purchase pest inspection and $300 – $700 for a combined building and pest inspection

For a ballpark idea, think about the size of your property:

$130 for a 3 bedroom house (one-off treatment internal and external spray only)

$170 for a 4 bedroom house (one-off treatment internal and external spray only)

$150 – $275 for indoor flea and tick treatment

$250 – $300 for rodent removal

$225 for possum removal

$180 – $225 for termite control of an isolated area

$250 for a pre-purchase pest inspection

$300 – $600 for a combined building and pest inspection

Household pests come in all shapes and sizes – from diminutive bed bugs and termites to ‘cute’ furry possums and the widely reviled cockroach.

Possums can cause structural damage to ceilings and roofing, and can also keep you up all night. Removal is the most sensible option to get rid of them.

We’re not playing: Here’s how possums can help your household

Mother Nature Network lauded possums for their pest control attributes, explaining, “Since their diet allows them to indulge on snails, slugs and beetles, they are a welcome addition to the garden. Opossums also keep rats and cockroaches at bay by competing with them for food. In fact, it’s common for opossums to kill cockroaches and rats if they find them in their territory.”

Even if you can’t appreciate a possum’s ability to clear the woods of bacteria-laden carrion, the species has other adorable characteristics. Below are some little known tidbits about the critters: Possum or Opossum?

That means the undeveloped young they give birth to just 12 days after breeding then crawl into their mother’s pouch and attach to a teat. When they’re 80 or 90 days old, the young start riding on their mother’s back, sometimes five or 10 of them, with feet and tail firmly attached to her fur.

Possums are smartSure, they’re not so great at looking out for cars, but they have a remarkable memory. When possums were tested for the ability to remember where food is, they scored better than rats, rabbits, cats and even dogs. They can also make their way through a maze more quickly than either rats or cats.

Finding an Auto Repair Shop You Can Trust

This helps prevent breakdowns and often saves money by allowing you to make a small repair now rather than a much bigger one later. Also, a shop that knows you and your vehicle can better advise you about work that may soon be needed.

Repair Shop Types

The best time to look for a repair shop is before you need one.

there are four basic types of shops to choose from:

Dealerships – Dealer service departments are very familiar with the makes of cars they sell. They know common problems, have factory-trained technicians with the latest equipment, and have access to special service advisories from the automaker.

Independents – Quality independent repair shops can be less expensive than dealers. At independent shops you are more likely to deal directly with an owner or the technician servicing your car. However, there are a lot of independent shops and quality can vary widely, which makes your choice of facility very important.

Specialists – Some independent auto repair shops specialize in certain vehicle makes or systems. By focusing on a limited part of the market, these shops can provide very efficient and effective service. A specialty shop can be a good choice if you drive the make of vehicle it services, or need the type of repairs it provides.

Auto Repair Chains – These shops are often affiliated with department stores, tire companies, auto parts suppliers or other business entities. They often focus on high-volume services performed by low- to mid-level technicians. Chain shops frequently advertise low prices, and can offer good value.

Repair Shop Evaluation

Once you identify some potential auto repair shops, look into them further. How long have they been in business? This can be a good indicator of shop quality. How do they deal with consumer complaints? Check with the Better Business Bureau, state department of consumer affairs or Attorney General’s office. Online consumer sites and social networks can be good sources of auto repair shop feedback as well.

How To Choose The Best Auto Repair Shop

Have you been in an instance where you have had a vehicle trouble and you needed anyone to fix it? Almost all people had at one time. It can be very frustrating and have your vehicle fixed especially when you do not have any idea where to go and who will fix it. This is exactly the importance of having a trustworthy mechanic near your place when you first bought your car. Here are some tips on choosing a car mechanic should you need his services.

Get Recommendations:

All the experts agree with this idea: always get recommendations when you are about to choose the best car mechanic. Mechanics operate in the service industry, and they are not just there to service your vehicle, but additionally to service you too, meaning you need to make certain the car mechanic does not only understand how to fix a car, but he also understands how to treat his clients. The easiest method to know this is to buy recommendations prior to your visit to the mechanics service centre. Request family members and friends, as well as co-employees concerning the mechanics that they have worked with. You will likely find great opinions from them.

Take A Look At Their Shop:

Garage centers are not similar. Lot of people thinks that all garages are covered in filth and therefore are much disorganized. That is not the situation. When you choose a car mechanic, make certain that you take time to look at their garage. When the garage is totally filthy and it is disorganized, you might want to search for another mechanic. While a little of grime and grease is anticipated inside a garage, the garage ought to be organized to ensure that the car mechanic will find exactly what he needs. The place ought to be neat and comfortable for waiting while your vehicle gets repaired.

Pay Attention To Their Prices:

Another factor that is vital to look at when you are selecting a vehicle mechanic is the prices. When you are searching for a car mechanic you do not always want to obtain the least expensive mechanic. Sometimes inexpensive kind of mechanic does not possess the experience or training that is essential to get the vehicle in great shape. But neither would you like to discover the most costly. Rather, search for one which has fair prices. A business who hides their prices is not one that you ought to use. It is also advisable to compare their prices with other service centers.

How to Choose the Right Body Shop

As a vehicle owner, your chances of needing the services of a collision repair and refinishing facility are greater than you think. Whether it’s from storm damage, rust and corrosion, acid rain and harsh sunlight, or an automobile accident outright, the risks are real. It’s wise, then, to know how to select a body shop.

Many times when people are involved in an accident they think “the insurance company will take care of it for me.” In fact, it is your responsibility to choose who will do the repairs for you. This is not a choice that should be taken lightly, as it can involve protecting a major investment

Preliminaries

Start shopping for a body shop before you need one; you can make better decisions when you are not rushed or in a panic.

Ask friends and associates for their recommendations. Even in this high-tech era, old-fashioned word-of-mouth reputation is still valuable.

Check with your local consumer organization regarding the reputation of the facility in question. Ask about the number of complaints, if any, and determine how the complaints were resolved.

Always try to visit the shop before making the decision on who will repair your vehicle

At the Shop

Ask if the shop customarily handles your vehicle make and model. Ask how long the shop has been in business.

Look for a neat, well-organized facility with modern equipment. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend specific repair procedures and equipment for the repair of their vehicles. Ensure that the facility you choose is trained in these procedures and has the proper equipment.

Professionally run establishments will have a courteous, helpful staff willing to answer all of your questions.

Look for signs of professionalism in the customer service area: civic and community service awards, membership in the Better Business Bureau, customer service awards.

Many times you can see the vehicles being repaired by the shop. Are you impressed by the type of vehicles the company is repairing and the way the vehicles are being handled?

Also look for signs that the staff is technically competent, such as trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work training from I-CAR (the Inter-Industry ASE Conference on Auto Collision Repair, and certifications—a national standard of technician competence issued by the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

All policies, guarantees, and methods of payment should be posted or explained to your satisfaction.

Tips for Choosing an Auto-Repair Shop

However, choosing the right auto repair shop can be a challenging process, especially if you’re not mechanically knowledgeable. To avoid the frustrations of dealing with an unreliable mechanic, it’s important to look for an established and trustworthy auto repair shop near you

Ask for Recommendations

According to auto repair experts at Northside Collision, one of the best ways to find a reliable Syracuse auto body shop is to ask for recommendations. Talk to close friends, family members, and neighbors who are familiar with a reputable auto repair shop that you can visit. You’ll want to get their opinion about the quality of service offered and the reliability of their mechanics. Get this information before your car breakdowns, so you can be prepared when you need repairs done

Professional Certifications

Don’t assume that every auto repair technician you come across has the right professional qualifications to do repairs and maintenance work. Auto repair shops are expected to display their professional certifications as well as license documents so clients can easily verify their qualifications. Professional certifications indicate that the mechanics are up-to-date on their skills, knowledge, and training about specific aspects of car repair and maintenance.

Look for Specialized Experience

Experience is critical when choosing an auto repair shop. The more years they have been in business, the more knowledgeable they’ll be in diagnosing car problems and providing reliable repair solutions and maintenance guidelines. Experienced auto mechanics will know what is expected when it comes to serving clients and ensuring that they’re satisfied with their services

Check Your Warranty

Check if your car is still under warranty. Auto warranties vary, and the lack of clarity surrounding who is supposed to service your car and what parts can be used to do repairs is often a grey area. You may not be able to choose an auto repair shop that’s not affiliated with the dealership, and violating your warranty can mean the agreement no longer covers your car. If you’re not sure, call your dealer to get clear information

How To Choose An Auto Repair Shop

The best way to avoid auto repair rip-offs to be prepared. Being familiar with your vehicle, knowing how it works and how to identify common problems your vehicle has is a good beginning.

New Parts:

New parts are generally made to meet the original manufacturer’s specifications, either by the manufacturer or an independent company. Some states may require repair shops to tell you if non-original equipment is used in a repair. At Ian’s Auto Service

Rebuilt Parts:

These are parts that have been restored to a sound working condition. Many manufacturers who provide rebuilt parts offer warranties covering these type of parts but typically not the labor to install them.

Salvage Parts:

Salvage parts are used parts taken from another vehicle without alteration. For some specialized repairs, salvage parts may be the only source for certain items, but reliability is sometimes an issue depending on the condition of the part.

Steps On How To Find A DUI Lawyer For Your Drunk Driving Legal Case

Experience in Drunk Driving Cases

Years ago, back when the yellow pages were the primary form of advertisement, the phone book listed hundreds of lawyers claiming to be “DUI Specialists.” None of these lawyers were members of the National College for DUI Defense, but these same lawyers also practiced personal injury, probate, medical malpractice, divorce, child custody, etc. One might wonder, with all these areas of practice, how these old DUI Specialists had time to learn the science of breath and blood testing and winning strategies for defending a drunk driving case. The bottom-line was that these specialists specialized in pleading people to impaired driving.

In the last few years, there has been explosion of websites with lawyers claiming to be drunk driving experts. It takes very little effort to claim to be an experienced drunk driving lawyer, and a good website designer can make an inexperienced lawyer look remarkable. Many of these websites are run by nonlawyers who offer to sell spots to lawyers, renting out the page on a monthly basis.

The average person facing a drunk driving offense has never been charged with a criminal offense, so they have had little exposure to the criminal justice system. Lawyers tend to specialize in one or two narrow areas of practice, with far less than half practicing criminal defense. Amongst criminal defense lawyers, even fewer focus on drunk driving defense, which has been acknowledged as a specialized area of law by the American Bar Association. That said, however, nearly every general practitioner has handled a drunk driving case, and many lawyers view these cases as an easy source of revenue.

Your prior experience with lawyers is probably very limited, if you have any experience at all. You probably don’t know what attorneys normally charge or how to distinguish a mediocre lawyer from a great lawyer. A lot of people rely upon word of mouth, which isn’t necessarily a bad place to start, but word of mouth assumes that your friends and family know a good drunk driving lawyer. You can turn to a local attorney, but chances are pretty good you’ll end up with a general practitioner or worse. Be forewarned that divorce attorneys and personal injury lawyers are more than happy to take on a drunk driving case as supplemental income, and there are no prerequisites that prevent a lawyer–regardless of the lawyer’s level of skill, knowledge, or normal area of practice–from advertising as a DUI defense lawyer.

Based upon my own experience, I have found that the typical lawyer charges anywhere from $500 to $10,000 on a drunk driving case, with an average in Wayne and Oakland County around $2,000. It is not unusual for a really good DUI defense lawyer to charge $15,000 or more on a case. With the tremendous difference in price, and little exposure to the lawyers out on the market, it can be difficult to find the right lawyer for your case

Choosing a DUI Defense Attorney

Is the Attorney’s Primary Focus DUI and Criminal Defense?

One of the most complicated and complex areas of criminal law is DUI and Drunk Driving Defense. A skilled DUI Defense Attorney must  have a working knowledge and understanding of all of the chemical testing devices used in the case, principles of toxicology, and well as an understanding of what constitutes as “probable cause” for stopping a motorist by law enforcement.

Is the lawyer a member of the National College for DUI Defense?

The National College for DUI Defense is a college that is held each year on the campus of Harvard law School and is made up of some of the best and most dedicated lawyers in the United States. Anyone who is a member certainly is serious about DUI defense. The College also is the only body authorized by the American Bar Association to issue certification in the recognized legal specialty of  DUI defense

Is the lawyer well known in the field of DUI defense?

As is any profession, some individuals always standout, and are highly regarded and well respected.  Hanna & Ruud, LLC, is recognized as an industry leader in DUI and Criminal Defense. Our Attorneys have been featured in national magazines and publications.

Tips For Choosing The Right DUI Lawyer

Not all that long ago, an arrest – or even a conviction – for driving under the influence was really not that big of a deal in the United States. Most people received nothing more than the proverbial “slap on the wrist” for a first time DUI. Today, however, an arrest for DUI is taken seriously as a result of a concerted effort by advocacy groups and government agencies to bring awareness to the public regarding the dangers of drinking and driving. If you were recently arrested in Omaha, Nebraska for DUI, the most important thing you can do at this point is to retain the services of an experienced Nebraska DUI attorney. If you have never had the need to hire a criminal defense attorney before, the following tips may help you choose the right DUI lawyer for you and your case.

Consider your situation. Before you start looking for an attorney, make sure you understand the charges against you, consider your game plan, and set a budget. Each of these will be important when choosing an attorney. Choosing an attorney whose practice is devoted entirely, or at least primarily, to criminal defense is essential because you don’t want an attorney who spends the majority of his/her time reviewing contracts to represent you in a criminal prosecution. Even better, look for an attorney who has a practice that is focused even more narrowly on DUI cases. Also, consider how you wish to resolve your case – plea agreement or trial because some defense attorneys have a reputation for negotiating great plea agreements while others almost always go to trial so it is important to consider which direction you are inclined to go with your case. Finally, there can be a fairly wide range of fees charged by attorneys. Usually, although not always, the disparity in fees reflects the disparity in experience. While this is not the time to shop for bargains, you do need to know how much you can afford to pay an attorney before you set out to hire one.

Ask friends, family members, and co-workers for a referral. Understandably, you may be reluctant to discuss your situation with people you know. Being arrested and charged with a crime is usually not something people are excited about sharing with others. You might be surprised, however, at how many people you know have either been arrested for driving under the influence themselves or had a close loved one who was. The reality is that being arrested for a DUI is just not that shocking, or uncommon, in the United States. A referral offers you first-hand information about an attorney. It isn’t just the positive feedback that can be helpful either. Sometimes, the negative experiences people you know had with the attorney can be just as helpful as the positive feedback.

Search the internet. Choosing an attorney based solely on the attorney’s website is never a good idea; however, you can obtain a wealth of information by searching the internet for a Nebraska criminal defense attorney. You will likely find an attorney’s biography, the areas of the law the attorney practices, and how long the lawyer has been in practice, among other helpful information. Sometimes an attorney’s bio instantly resonates with a client, ultimately resulting in a successful attorney-client relationship.

Schedule consultations. Most Nebraska criminal defense attorneys will offer a free, or low cost, initial consultation. Once you have a short list of potential attorneys, schedule initial consultations with them to discuss your case. Be sure to prepare for the meetings by gathering documents and making copies for the attorney, preparing questions you have for the attorneys, and preparing yourself to answer some tough questions the attorney may have for you. By the time you are done with your consultations you should be ready to choose an attorney for your case.

CHOOSING THE BEST DUI ATTORNEY

HOW TO OBTAIN A SKILLED DRUNK DRIVING DEFENSE LAWYER

Like most individuals arrested and accused of driving under the influence, you probably have little or no experience with the legal system and the proper way to find a criminal defense lawyer for DUI charges. If you had a heart problem, you would want a heart specialist as opposed to an eye doctor, and the same thinking should apply to the lawyer you choose. Retain legal counsel that is experienced and knowledgeable in this area of the law.

Unfortunately, finding the right Marin County DUI attorney can be a confusing process, as there is a lot of misinformation on websites and mailers. Here some of the things to watch out for:

False and misleading claims regarding DUI success rates. One of the most common is the claim that they get the DUI charges against their clients dismissed in a high percentage of their cases. The truth is that defendants are most often charged with two DUI offenses: driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or above. When a guilty plea is entered for one of the two charges, the other is almost always dismissed.

Claims of being recognized as a Top 10% Trial Lawyer or similar boast. They pay for the plaque and badge to put on their website and there is no substance to it at all.

Numerous online reviews that appear to be written in the same style and with shallow content.

Solicitations mailed to your home. There are two types of lawyers doing it. One is the marketing pro who never goes to court and has inexperienced lawyers handling everything. The other is the lawyer desperate for business.

What to Look For:

A good place to start when choosing the best DUI lawyer for your case is to ask people in and around Marin County who are in a position to know. Visit the local courthouse and ask bailiffs, clerks, public defenders, and other attorneys the same question, “which DUI lawyer would you recommend?”

Here are some other important questions to ask when you are looking for the right DUI attorney to represent you:

Is the lawyer Board-Certified by the National College for DUI Defense, as approved by the American Bar Association?

Does the lawyer hold an A-V rating by Martindale-Hubbell™? (This is the highest ranking an attorney can obtain from other lawyers).

Has the lawyer received special training in chemical testing and field sobriety tests?

Will the lawyer personally handle your case, or are they just a slick marketer who will farm your case out to an inexperienced associate?

Does the lawyer ever take DUI cases to trial?

Is the lawyer based in San Rafael, or are they just paying for a mail drop address at 4040 Civic Center Dr.?

How long has the lawyer been in practice?

HOW DO I FIND THE BEST DUI DEFENSE LAWYERS?

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE

Frederick Slone has successfully defended DUI cases in the state of Alaska for over 30 years. At Kasmar & Slone, you’re assured of being represented by a lawyer who understands drunk driving laws, what it takes to build a solid successful defense, and one who will guide you through this ordeal.

ATTORNEY REFERRALS

The best way to find an experienced drunk driving defense lawyer is by reputation. Ask other lawyers in the area for recommendations as to the best DUI attorneys. Ask them who THEY would hire if arrested for a drunk driving offense.

NATIONAL COLLEGE FOR DUI DEFENSE

Another excellent source for finding an experienced and competent drunk driving defense attorney is the National College For DUI Defense, a non-profit legal organization committed to the education and training of DUI defense lawyers. The College admits DUI attorneys selectively.

ATTORNEYS COMMITTED TO DUI DEFENSE -VS- DABBLERS

As drunk driving cases can be very complex, you should look for an attorney who devotes the majority of his or her practice to the defense of DUI cases

TRUST IS PARAMOUNT

Above all, you must have a sense of comfort and confidence about your case after meeting with an attorney. If you don’t trust the attorney, you should look further.

The Most Efficient Solution For A Hydro Jetting Service

Everything You Need to Know About Hydrojetting

Hydrojetting is a new plumbing strategy that plumbers all over the country are beginning to adopt to tackle more severe clogs that cannot be easily remedied with plungers. This technology is a significant addition to the plumbing industry and it is important to understand exactly how it works.

What is Hydrojetting and How Does it Work?

Hydrojetting is a process that uses pressurized water to clear pipes. Professionals pump the high-pressure water through your pipes and it clears the interior of any debris that has built up and caused a clogged or slower flow.

Previously, most plumbers would use a technique called rodding. Rodding is when you use a tool to create a hole through the debris in an effort to open up the flow more. Hydrojetting is significantly more thorough and effective in clearing build-up.

A plumber will identify the ideal area to pump the water and insert a hose that is connected to a large tank of water. Depending on the severity and nature of your clog, the plumber will choose a pressure level to use. Hydrojetting can shoot up to 20 gallons of water through your pipes each minute. Because most pipes angle downward from your home into the sewer system, the dislodged material that was blocking your pipe will flow down into the sewer system.

Hydrojetting can take care of a wide variety of different materials. It will clear grease, hair, food or soap residue, and even tree roots and mineral build-up.

Steps in the Hydro Jetting Process

Here’s what occurs when you schedule this service:

1. Your licensed plumber locates the plumbing system cleanout, which gives an easy access point to the piping throughout your home.

2. He or she uses a  camera to inspect your plumbing pipes and drain prior to jetting. This step searches for damage within the system, such as cracked or crumbling pipes, which could be worsened by the process.

3. Your plumber inserts the jetting hose downstream into the plumbing lines. This durable hose attaches to a water tank that pressurizes water.

4. Your plumber adjusts the water pressure to appropriate levels for pipe conditions. Hydro jetting typically involves water pressure up to 35,000 psi.

5. Once the high-pressured water begins, the tool moves upstream through the plumbing lines as it scours the interior pipe walls.

6. The tool removes built-up debris from the inside of the pipe walls. Gravity pulls the debris down through the home plumbing system and safely flushes it out of the home.

What is Hydro Jetting Used For?

Hydro jetting is used to completely eliminate scale buildup and heavy root intrusion in main sewer lines, and heavy grease and scale buildup in kitchen lines. It is especially useful in commercial applications for restaurant lines due to excessive grease. When kitchen drain pipes get frequent use and have even minimal amounts of grease poured into them on a regular basis, they can quickly become full and close off the flow of water. Additionally, the unique plumbing method of hydro jetting will rotate the high-pressure water in the drain lines, scouring the inside of the pipe and restoring it to optimal condition.

Is Hydro Jetting Safe?

Hydro jetting, even at the highest PSI is safe for most kitchen and sewer drain lines. It is especially important that the licensed contractor performs a camera inspection prior to hydro jetting to determine the pipeline condition. If the pipe is deteriorating, has cracks or holes, or looks frail in places, hydro jetting may not be the best immediate option. Even regular snaking can break a drain line that is in poor condition. When hiring a drain specialist, make sure to choose a licensed, insured and bonded contractor to keep your property safe and protect the integrity of the lines as much as possible.

Hydro Jetting Procedure

Hydro jetting is done by inserting the specialized hose inside a cleanout. A cleanout is an opening in the plumbing system that gives plumbers access to the sewer pipes for cleaning and repairs. The hose is then activated to allow highly-pressurized water to wash away any dirt and debris found in the sewer pipes. The pressure of the water coming out from a hydro jet can reach up to 3,500 psi which makes it an ideal method in removing even the most stubborn dirt such as tree roots. Hydro jetters can clean several hundred feet of sewer pipe.

Hydro Jetting Vs. Snaking

Cleaning the main drain of your sewer line is something that many homeowners need to do on a regular basis. This type of maintenance prevents sewer backups, removes tree roots from the pipe and is a good way to keep tabs on the state of the sewer line.

There are two standard methods for cleaning the sewage line: hydro jetting and snaking. Both methods are a common service offered by plumbing and drain cleaning companies. Understanding the differences between hydro jetting and snaking can help homeowners pick the right method for their sewer.

The Hydro Jetting Method

Hydro jetting is achieved when a very forceful stream of water between 3,000 and 8,000 PSI is forced into the sewer line. This stream of water is strong enough to clear out any debris or clogs in its way, including tree roots, grease and hair.

Advantages of Hydro jetting:

Hydro jetting is extremely effective: High water pressure is highly effective for cleaning out clogged sewers and maintaining a clean sewer line. A strong enough jet of water can even remove tree roots.

Hydro jetting services are versatile: With a high enough PSI, water pressure is strong enough to clear commercial sewer lines as well as domestic lines.

Disadvantages of Hydro jetting:

Too much water pressure can damage some pipes: Sometimes hydro jetting works a little too well. Older, fragile pipes and damaged pipes may not be able to withstand the force from such a powerful stream of water. Luckily, hydro jetting is not a do-it-yourself activity. Plumbing companies that offer hydro jetting services know to inspect pipes and determine the strength of pipes before using hydro jetting equipment.

The Snaking Method

Snaking is done with an auger. An auger looks like a long steel cable with a cork-screw like coil at one end. When the auger is inserted into the sewer line, the coil at the end pierces obstructions it encounters and clears a path through the pipe.

Advantages of Snaking:

Snaking is historically effective: It is a time-tested, proven method for clearing basic clogs in sewer drains.

It won’t damage fragile pipes: Snaking is relatively gentle and poses no threat to older pipes.

Disadvantages of Snaking:

Snaking only clears a path as wide as the tip of the auger: While snaking is an effective method for clearing basic clogs and increasing drainage speeds in slow sewer drains, snaking is only a temporary fix for many problems that homeowners experience with their sewer lines.

Why Use A Wedding Dj

WEDDING DJ – TIPS ON CHOOSING + TOP DJ’S

Choosing the right DJ for your wedding can make or break your special day as the music creates the whole vibe of your event. The soundtrack for your wedding reception will be created by the DJ that you choose. This is why it is important to find the right one

There are certain pointers for finding that extra special disc jockey. Who will transform your reception venue into an enjoyable location for all your guests? These are some of the factors we will be highlighting in this article on how to choose a wedding DJ. Things like wedding DJ songs or how much DJ’s for weddings might cost are all addressed below.

The Average Price For Wedding DJ

Music is the soul of a wedding, and only the best service can make your wedding unforgettable. Knowing the average wedding price for DJ helps you work better around your wedding budget.

The average wedding cost of a DJ is between $610 to $960. The minimum DJ’s price is $400 while the maximum is $2,200. This is for DJ costs only, as other side toppings attract extra pay. The average wedding DJ price for a 4 or 5hr long wedding is between $600 to $1500. A professional DJ’s costs for a wedding is between $1000 to $2500. This applies to DJ’s who are skilled and with years of experience on the job. They do it full time and charge quite a bit high.

Wedding DJ cost per hour

The hourly average cost of the DJ for a wedding is between $150 to $300. Most DJ’s charge an hourly rate. But others insist on a minimum number of hours one must book with them. You should also check how much they charge for overtime, and other add-on offers.

Deciding Between a Band and a DJ

Perhaps one of the hardest decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding reception is choosing between a band and DJ. Many aspects go into your decision, atmosphere, cost, and range of services. So, let’s dive in

Atmosphere.

The entertainment you select for your reception will set the mood for the entire evening (or afternoon if you’re doing a brunch wedding!). One thing to think about is the fact that not all bands are the same, just as not all DJs are the same. Folks who lean towards bands typically think DJs are either boring or obnoxious, which isn’t always true. And folks who lean towards DJs think bands are limited in genre, which also isn’t always true. A party band can play a wide range of music and provide an exciting atmosphere. A fun DJ can also keep the party going without being obnoxious by talking too much but instead being interactive with leading the crowd. In both cases, you should expect a fun evening for your guests with either.

Cost.

The difference between good and great is almost always cost. A great wedding band typically charges between $7,500 and $10,000. Keep in mind, they have to divide that among the band members, the booking agent, etc. A great wedding DJ will charge between $1,500 and $3,000. Factored into the DJ’s costs are equipment, insurance, advertising, and value of services. There are cheaper bands and DJs, but if you’re looking for the best and most exciting environment, these are good ballpark figures to consider.

Range of services.

This is where you need to ask questions to your band or DJ. Do they offer multiple setups outside of reception for cocktail hour and ceremony? Do they provide MC services on your wedding day and help direct the timeline of events? Do they take breaks? If yes, for how long? Do they take requests from guests or have a pre-crafted playlist? The answers to these questions should factor into your decision as well.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING DJ

There are two vital things that make or break your wedding – food and music. While the former is easier to control, choosing the right wedding DJ is a trickier task. Your DJ is the one who sets the mood for the event and ultimately ensures that everyone has a great time. If you get a bad one, well… let’s just hope no one snores too loudly! Here’s a checklist of things to note when hiring a DJ for your celebrations.

You get what you pay for

DJs are a cheaper alternative to “live” bands and prices do vary from as little as $250 to $3,000. Try to stick to your budget as there are many options out there. That being said, considering how much you’re spending on the rest of the day (flowers, venue etc.), don’t cut back on this and have your reception ruined by dull, snoozy entertainment

Word of mouth recommendations

When seeking out DJs, ask people you trust for recommendations, like friends and family or your venue operator. Don’t just take the word of a friend of a friend who’s knows of somebody who dabbles… Your DJ should be fun, reliable and flexible to changes. Do check out their equipment too. You wouldn’t want someone who uses tacky effects as part of the package, or has poor quality speakers (yikes!)

Ask the right questions

What if you’re sick or unable to make it to the event? What happens if your computer breaks down in the middle of the reception? Do you play songs with explicit lyrics? How will you encourage guests to dance? These are some questions you should be clearing out of the way before hiring your DJ. You wouldn’t want someone who doesn’t know how to work the crowd or doesn’t have a Plan B

Handling the playlist

A good, professional DJ always caters to the clients and guests. While your DJ will add their own style and flair to put the night together musically, he or she must honour your must-play and do-not-play lists. But the bigger question is – do you want to approve every song or give him the freedom of creative expression? Songs for specific aspects, like your first dance, should definitely be picked out beforehand. But for the rest of the day, give your DJ the freedom to mix it up.

How to Choose a Wedding DJ

Choosing a Wedding DJ

As a wedding DJ myself, I’ve followed this industry for the last ten years and have met many other DJs along the way.  With so many other to-dos when you’re planning a wedding, hiring a DJ can sometimes get pushed to the bottom of the list.  If you are struggling with how to make such a large decision, I’ve put together a quick guide to helping you pick the right wedding DJ.  I’ll refrain from talking about my company in this blog post, but if you have questions about Bow Ty Audio

Price

How much it costs to book a DJ usually indicates quality.  If quality is a concern of yours, you should expect to pay more than $1,000.  The best wedding DJs do this as their full-time gig and the professional ones truly care about their clientele and production quality.  These DJ’s want to give their clients the best experience possible – not only because they care but because if they don’t they will be out of business!

Experience

Experience is the most important aspect when choosing a wedding DJ.  If you think back, I imagine you can remember a wedding you attended where the DJ made or broke the evening…  With that being said, you can’t go wrong with an experienced wedding DJ with the right equipment.  As we discussed before, price is a good indicator of quality but you may have to look deeper to prove it

Before reaching out to any DJ make sure to read the reviews on the ones you are considering.  Reviews from The Knot, Wedding Wire or Google can be very helpful.  You can gain a lot of information about the type of work the DJ does, how he or she interacts with clients, and the type of experience he offers through previous client’s feedback.  Once you’ve narrowed down your list, make sure to ask your DJ how long they’ve been DJing or how many weddings they’ve done.  They have to be doing something right if they’re still going after many years!

Style

My last point is on the DJ’s style.  You want to find a DJ that is professional & resonates with your tastes.  Let your DJ know what genres or songs you’d like played and what type of music they should skip.  You should definitely ask if they’ve DJed weddings in the past that align with your preferences.  Some DJs are skilled at mixing music, some know all the best two-step songs, etc.

How To Choose The Perfect Wedding DJ

Everyone knows that getting married is so much more than just the ceremony itself and it is immensely important to get the evening entertainment spot on. The route most people to go down is the wedding DJ, and when done correctly this can be a big hit.

What Should A Wedding DJ Provide?

First and foremost a wedding DJ is there to make sure you and all your guests have a good time, therefore, choosing the right one is absolutely crucial. As well as bringing their own equipment including mixers, lights and speakers a sense of fun and enthusiasm are even more important.

When to Book A Wedding DJ and How?

It is never too soon to put plans in place for your special day, so as soon as you know your date then get in touch with Champions Music & Entertainment and we can get the wheels in motion to make sure everything is done with minimal hassle.

How Much Does A Wedding DJ Cost?

Again, this really depends on what you want. Evidently, a celebrity DJ will bring a higher charge due to their celebrity status but this does not necessarily mean that the quality suffers by opting for the non-celeb alternative.

For example, DJ Ross Maslin might not be a household name but he has won awards for his DJ skills in the UK. Having appeared at over 100 venues across the country he is extremely versatile and as there is likely to be a wide range of ages at your wedding, is able to leave all of them thoroughly entertained. Champions Music & Entertainment are able to listen to your exact needs and then match you to a wedding DJ who suits you best.

Best Hardwood Flooring Tips To Save You Money

TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR HARDWOOD FLOORING

WHAT TYPE OF HOME DO YOU LIVE IN?

The type of residence will significantly influence the flooring type and installation method you need. In a single-family home, the subfloor will dictate the type of floor you can install. In a condominium, your condo owner’s agreement usually has rules regarding soundproofing which have to be considered. In a basement, an engineered floor will be your preferred option.

HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE IN YOUR HOME?

The more people there are, the greater the traffic and the more durable your finish needs to be. If you have young children or pets, choose a textured hardwood floor or one with character and color variation. Matte finishes also tend to minimize the appearance of dents and scratches.

WHAT KIND OF FURNITURE IS IN THE ROOM, AND WHAT STYLE OF DÉCOR?

Is there already wood in the room? Are there a lot of furnishings, or just a few? What shades are they? In a new home, the ambiance you’re looking for will largely influence your choice of color, wood species, grade, finish, board width, and direction.

WHAT TYPE OF FLOORING IS RIGHT FOR YOUR ROOM?

The right type of flooring for you depends on the room where it will be installed. Various floor types are available according to your needs: Engineered wood, Lock engineered wood, engineered wood Trubalance and solid wood. See a dealer for advice on choosing a floor.

WHAT ROOMS ARE YOU PLANNING TO FLOOR?

Sketch out the rooms where you want to install your hardwood floor.  Indicate the areas of the rooms and make note of stairways, closets, and any obstacles that will require special fitting. Find out what kind of subfloor you have and in what direction the joists run. Remember that engineered flooring is the best choice for basements.

What is the best hardwood floor for my room?

To ensure you select the best hardwood flooring that matches your lifestyle, budget and home design, take time to compare different hardwood floor types. Talk with an expert at your local Carpet One Floor & Home store to learn more about which type of hardwood flooring would best work in your space.

When choosing the best hardwood flooring for your room, you have the option to choose between standard hardwood flooring and engineered hardwood.

Traditional or solid hardwood flooring consists of single strips of wood. The biggest benefit to solid hardwood is that it can easily be customized, sanded, and re-stained to change finishes as your styles change.

Engineered hardwood planks come in many colors and wood types, just like solid wood. However, engineered hardwood is made by laminating 3-5 strips together, with grains running at different angles. Engineered Hardwood is more structurally sound so it can be installed in areas where solid wood flooring might not be an option, for example, moist basements. Engineered Hardwood is also typically less expensive and tends to be more water-resistant compared to traditional solid wood floors.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Hardwood Flooring for Your Home

There are different types of flooring from hardwood, stone, vinyl to carpet and terrazzo. Hardwood is considered a high-quality option for its characteristics. It is durable and resistant to dust and debris. It can also last a lifetime if properly maintained. All hardwood is not created equal and choosing the best flooring is not a matter of colour preferences or aesthetics alone. Hardwood allows plenty of scope for creativity with different finishes, textures, and hardness ratings for the chosen flooring. Natural wood is versatile and perfect for every room in your home, except for basement and bathroom.

Origin of hardwood flooring

Way before the discovery of the New World, the Royals were the first to enjoy wooden flooring. Back then, the procedure of acquiring hardwood was time-consuming and laborious. They were hand-scraped and sanded. Wooden flooring became increasingly common during the Colonial Era. During 1800-1945, wood flooring was widely used and came from local species of trees. They were assembled in the simplest manner. However, after World War II, hardwood flooring experienced a decline in demand as cheaper flooring alternatives were introduced. The demand for hardwood flooring has revived in recent times for its sophistication and timeless appeal.

Making of solid hardwood floorboards

The trees are cut into logs and depending on the quality, their usage is determined. The planks are made from single wood piece and levelled first. Tongue and groove edges are cut using respective machines. Logs with tight grain and fewer knots are used for cutting out planks for flooring. There are different varieties of cutting methods that create different grain patterns. The logs are cut into three main patterns- rift sawn, quarterly sawn, and plain sawn. The final product can have different types of finish or can be left unfinished as well which has a different appeal.

Types of finishes

Hardwood flooring can be pre-finished, or site finished. There are different types of finish for hardwood and each finish has certain benefits and characteristics. From oil penetrates, oil-like hybrids, to site finished polyurethane and prefinished UV cured urethane finish, the choices are varied.

Oil penetrates imparts a soft, matte and natural look to the wood planks. While it is comparatively more prone to scratches, the scratches on such floorboards are less noticeable. Soft oil finish is easier to maintain, and you can touch up the problematic areas on a spot-by-spot.

Flooring Buying Guide

Installing a new floor is one of the more expensive home improvement projects you’ll undertake. With so many choices—hardwood, laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, tile—where do you begin?

Budget is certain to factor into your decision. But you should also consider how much foot traffic, sunlight, and wear and tear your flooring will endure

For example, some engineered woods, along with a few solid wood types of flooring, aren’t as resistant to moisture as vinyl or laminate flooring—a serious drawback in a bathroom or busy kitchen. Porcelain tile would be a better choice for durability, but it can be expensive and requires labor-intensive installation

How We Test Flooring

We test wear resistance by subjecting a 6×6-inch sample of each flooring material to an abrasion machine fitted with a fine sandpaper disc, and assessing each sample for signs of visible wear after each cycle of sanding.

Types of Flooring

Most flooring falls into one of the following six types. The type you choose will depend on your needs and budget—not to mention your personal style and aesthetic.

Buyer’s Guide to Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are beautiful, durable, and easy to clean. These benefits come at a higher price than other hard-surface flooring options, but the longevity and style of wood flooring can be worth it.

Hardwood floors come in a range of styles and species. There are strips, planks, and parquet styles, and colors ranging from gray to deep red, depending on the species and stain you choose. Since there are so many options, there’s something out there to suit almost any space and taste.

Solid hardwood vs. engineered hardwood

When you’re shopping, you’ll need to choose between solid and engineered hardwood.

Traditional hardwood flooring, or solid hardwood, comes in planks of solid wood. Solid hardwood floors can be refinished multiple times. While more costly than engineered hardwood, being able to refinish the floor will make it last longer

Engineered hardwood has a layer of hardwood on top of other materials that are designed to restrict the natural expansion and contraction of the wood. Engineered hardwood looks great and has a lower price than solid hardwood, but it can’t always be refinished like solid hardwood can, depending on the thickness of the top hardwood layer.

Common Myths About Wild Bat

Bat Removal and Control

Bats are usually classified as a pest species due to their habits of living in houses. The most common complaints include the following:

  • Bats living in the attic
  • Bats living in the chimney
  • Odor due to bat droppings
  • Bats swarming around building
  • Loose bat stuck inside home

For these reasons, many people wish to have colonies of bats removed from the building. Please be aware that this is a specialty service.

Bat Removal – How To Get Bats Out of Buildings

Step 1

Perform a full inspection of the building. This is to determine exactly how the bats are getting in and out.
Step 2

Perform an attic inspection, and learn to identify the species of bat. This is important because different bats have different birthing and hibernating seasons.
Step 3

Exclude the bats – DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAP THEM. Read here why you should not try to do bat trapping, but rather bat exclusion, which is the process of letting them fly out, but not back in, to the building.
Step 4

Seal up the house to keep bats out permanently. In fact, much of this is done prior to the exclusion – just be sure not to seal up the primary exit points while any bats are inside!!
Step 5

Clean the attic or walls, or space where the bats lived and defecated

Inspect the buildings for entry points and roosting areas.

Identify areas in and around buildings where bats can enter. This step is vital for effective placement of bat-eviction tubes and nets.

To witness bats entering or exiting the building, monitor it during early evening (dusk) and just before dawn. Note all the locations where the bats leave the building. During cooler months, you may need to inspect several nights in a row to establish exit/entry points, because bats do not leave the roost at night in cold weather.

When inspecting the exterior of the building, look along roof lines and behind gutter placement for rub marks, which are stains left by the oils and dirt rubbing off the bats’ hair. Like rodents, bats will leave some evidence of staining; however, bat stains are harder to see. Also look at ground level for guano—in most cases, the bat-entry points will have some guano buildup if the colony is large enough.

Inside, identify all parts of the building where they may have established roosts. These areas can include chimneys, attic spaces, wall spaces, ceiling spaces, expansion joints, and roof overhangs. Bats also roost behind gutters, in sports stadiums, and beneath or behind signs and fixtures.

Exclusion

The process of exclusion involves using netting or tubes at entry points, which allow the bats to drop down and take flight but which confound re-entry. The excluders are left in place for a week, so that the bats give up. After they’re gone, the plugging and sealing and caulking can take place.

In parts of the country, bats migrate in fall to hibernate for the winter; if yours have left for the season, and you know where they’re coming in, late fall is the time to plug up all holes and cracks around windows, fascia and soffits, cornices, chimney flashing, etc. If the bats were living in the chimney, cover the top with a “box” made of fine-mesh screening.

If the bats have taken up residence, plan to evict them in late summer or early spring, not after birthing season, when pups (who can’t fly) would be orphaned and die. Don’t evict them in winter, when they’re hibernating and can’t fly out.

Consider Offering Alternatives

Bats found roosting in your home aren’t malicious, and they certainly don’t mean you any harm – in fact, because of their role as insect-eaters and mosquito snatchers, bats are actually highly beneficial to the local ecosystem. That’s why it may be a good idea to offer bats an alternative roosting spot nearby – that way, they won’t be as tempted by the security of your attic.

Bat boxes and bat houses are as easy to set up as a birdhouse, but are designed to offer ideal roosting space for bats and their pups. Consider installing a bat house on a tree or a flat surface facing south or southeast (with around 6 to 8 hours of sun) at least 10 feet off the ground. By giving bats a better alternative nearby, you make your home less tempting and allow bats to live in peace – a helpful neighbor for those buggy summer nights.

Evicting bats

The best way to get bats to leave is to eliminate roost-friendly sites. To do that, bat experts recommend:

• Shining a bright light on the spot 24 hours a day for a week.

• Using nontoxic aerosol dog or cat repellents available at hardware and garden stores. Apply the spray during the daytime and only when bats are not present.

• Hanging Mylar balloons or strips of aluminum foil from the porch ceiling.

Don’t use sticky bird repellents. Some of them are marketed as a deterrent for bats, but they are inhumane. Bats can become trapped and die.

Effectiveness Of The Electrical Panel Upgrades

Symptoms of Sick Electrical Panels

Old electrical panels can malfunction, but most of the time the problem stems from overloaded circuits. At first you might notice flickering lights or you might have to turn off an appliance in order to use another plugged into the same circuit. But if the panel is malfunctioning or defective, the breakers will trip often, or they will fail to trip and someone might be shocked. In the worst case, a breaker that fails to trip may cause fire, smoke and melted wires from overheating.

Checking Your Electrical Panel

Your electrical panel needs a checkup, especially if it’s more than 25 years old. Here are the signs to look for to see if you might need a new electrical panel:

  • You hear crackling sounds from the electrical panel.
  • You see corrosion and rust on the circuit breakers.
  • The interior of the electrical panel feels warm.
  • Appliances are running at less than full power.
  • Outlets near water sources – such as sinks, tubs, dishwashers and clothes washers – are not GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupters). These outlets stop the electricity if an appliance comes into contact with water, preventing electrocution.
  • You’re always using extension cords.
  • Your home has a 60-amp electrical service.
  • Your home has 100-amp electrical service, but it still can’t operate some appliances.
  • Your older home has a fuse block panel or split-bus panel, which do not have a main breaker.

Signs You Should Replace or Upgrade the Electrical Panel

There are a few instances where you’ll want to replace your electrical panel as soon as possible. Learn how to locate your electrical panel.

If you have any of the following electrical panels, contact an electrician right away to diagnose the situation:

Outdated Electrical Panels

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) and Zinsco electrical panels were a very common choice from the 1950s to the 1980s. Unfortunately, as years passed, people started realizing that they weren’t functioning properly. Too often, the panels would fail to cut off power when there is a short circuit or too much current.

If your electrical panel does not properly trip when an electrical hazard is detected, a fire could start.

Outdated panels are any panels that are more than 30 years old. If you have an older panel, you may only have 60-amp electrical service as opposed to the 150 or 200-amp service of modern homes. Contact an electrician if your panel is over 20 years old.

Water Leak

If you experience a water leak near your electrical panel, keep away from the area and call an electrician immediately. If there is any evidence that the panel has been exposed to water (including rust stains or corrosion on the wiring), it will probably need to be replaced.

Underpowered Panel

Every electrical panel has a maximum power rating – which dictates the amount of space for breakers. The original fuse panels offered 60 amps of power which were followed by the standard breaker panels at 100 amps. The recommended amount for modern builds and upgrades is 200 amps. If you are planning on a remodeling project or adding on to your home, you may need to replace your panel entirely.

Faulty Wiring

Poor installation can contribute to a number of problems that should be addressed in an electrical panel. Oversized breakers, circuits doubled-up on a single-pole breaker and wires crossing over the panel’s center are just a few problems that would require an update from an electrician.

Are Your Breakers Tripping Too Often?

One of the vital roles of your electrical panel is to prevent short circuits and circuit overloads. A short or overloaded circuit could be dangerous, causing fires or electrocution. To prevent that, a breaker that notices a short or overload with switch off, shutting down power to the affected circuit. It is a crucial failsafe that prevents damage to your home or even a risk of injury to you and your family.

But if your circuit breaker is switching off more than once in a while, it may be a sign that something is wrong. One possibility is that the wiring has become loose or exposed. The heat of transferring electricity can cause wires to expand and contract. Over time, expansion and contraction can cause connections to loosen. If a small gap opens up between a wire and an outlet, the electricity can try to jump the gap in the form of a spark. Such sparking is a serious fire hazard and needs immediate attention.

Regularly tripping circuit breakers could also be a sign of overload. If you are trying to use too many electrical devices at once, you may be overloading your electrical panel. It’s time for an upgrade.

What Should I Expect from a Service Upgrade or Panel Change?

Bear the following in mind before you hire an Electrical Contractor for this project:

  • The power will be out for a minimum of four hours. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
  • Unplug all electronics. The power will be turned on and off repetitively and may cause problems.
  • The workers will stay working on the panel (and surrounding area), which could be outside. But, they may need to get to the water meter and water tank to do other work.
  • Since the power will be off, the worksite will be dark. Please keep the areas clear for them.
  • The EC will need power. Please try to arrange a power source that the EC can plug an extension cord into that is always helpful. Asking your neighbour is a great option.
  • The EC may have to go to other rooms in the home to test and identify receptacles, or lights etc. They will use generic terms like “master bathroom”, “SE bedroom”, etc. Use the same lingo you are talking to your EC about your home (they don’t know where “Bob’s Room” is, for example).

Panel Produces Heat or Burning Smell

When the electrical panel box feels warm or produces a burning smell, it could signify faulty wiring or an overloaded, defective panel. We highly recommend scheduling a service appointment and potential electrical panel upgrade because heat can mean a high chance of electrical fire.

You Have a Fuse-Based System

Many electrical panels in older homes built before the 1970s still operate on fuses. Unlike circuit breakers which you can reset, fuses either melt, burn out or blow completely when they’re tripped. This is a fire hazard, and for an older home that needs to meet modern power demands, it’s definitely unsafe.
